  • New-build home (completed after 2022)
  • Already had BUS grant on this property
  • Property in Scotland or Northern Ireland (different schemes apply)
  • Social housing (landlord must use different scheme)

Application Process (Easy!)

You don't apply yourself - your installer does it. Takes about 5 minutes.

Step 1: Get Quotes

Get quotes from MCS-certified installers. They'll include the grant automatically.

Find MCS installers near you →

Step 2: Heat Loss Survey

Installer completes a Heat Loss Survey (required for grant). This ensures correct sizing.

Step 3: Installer Applies

Before installation, installer submits application. Usually approved within 1-2 days.

Step 4: Installation

Heat pump installed. Grant amount deducted from final invoice. You pay the rest.

Common Questions

Is there an income limit?

No. Unlike ECO4 or Home Upgrade Grant, BUS has no income limits. Everyone qualifies.

Can I combine with other grants?

No. BUS cannot be combined with ECO4 or Home Upgrade Grant. But you can use it with 0% VAT (applies automatically to heat pumps).

What if my EPC is old/expired?

That's fine. An EPC just needs to exist (even if expired). Installer can order a new one if needed (£60-£120).

How long will the grant last?

Current scheme runs until 2028. Budget is monitored monthly. Apply sooner rather than later.

Next Steps

The hardest part is finding a good installer. Make sure they're:

  • MCS-certified (required for grant)
  • Experienced with BUS grant applications
  • Include Heat Loss Survey in quote
  • Show grant deduction clearly on quote
